The Triangle United U-16 Fire girls backed up last fall’s ChallengeFest championship with a repeat performance this past weekend, winning a hard-fought championship game against the Winston-Salem Twins Royal 4-3 on penalty kicks after finishing 70 minutes of action in a 1-1 draw.
The 7-0 Fire went through group play undefeated to be matched up with the also undefeated Royal side. The final was scoreless in the first half before the Fire broke through with a goal from Melody Song midway through the second half. The Twins came back quickly to tie the score and that would stand until the end of regulation. The Twins missed one penalty kick before Elani Mansfield made a diving save for the Fire. That would be enough as Olivia Veneziano, Song, Diane Leadbetter and Emily Ferrell converted for the win.
